Often the best ideas develop during the drafting process, so it’s a crucial stage of article writing.

1. Warm Up
Warm-ups don’t just apply to exercise: they are equally important when it comes to writing! Don’t skip this step, as this is the most important part of a good writing routine. You’ll need to warm up your fingers and your brain before you start writing, and believe it or not, there are exercises that can work both muscles at once, but we’re just going to teach you one.
Sit at your computer, and type for 3 minutes on a blank document. Write anything that comes to mind, on any subject – just try not to stop, even for typos or errors. 2. Use Your Ideas
All you need to get started is an idea. Take the very first idea that comes into your head, and write a few sentences on it. Tell yourself that you don’t need to write an article on it – you are only going to write a few sentences. That way, you’re not putting yourself into a pressured mindset that will kill your creativity.
At this stage, don’t edit. You’ll likely be over-critical and nit-pick until there is nothing left of the few sentences you started with. Even leave your spelling and grammar errors alone – you have plenty of time for polishing later.
Just as important as starting is remembering to stop. After you’ve written down your ideas in a rough couple of paragraphs, leave the article alone until another day. When you’re new to writing, this can help keep you at a gentle pace that doesn’t feel overwhelming, whilst avoiding the feeling of being unproductive.
As you become more experienced, you may find yourself not wanting to stop – so don’t! If you’re really into an article and have some momentum going, just keep writing until you feel satisfied by your effort – just don’t tire yourself out.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
* Avoid formatting and editing. These will come at a later date, but for now, leave your writing in its rough form to keep your flow uninterrupted.
* Don’t sweat the small stuff. Full of typos? Leave it alone. Forgot some full stops? Leave it alone. You can always fix it later: now is all about getting words on paper.
* Relax. No one is going to see this article, so don’t worry about what other people think. Avoid being over-critical; this is not the time for perfection, so don’t try to be perfect.
